River Raisin National Battlefield Park
The River Raisin National Battlefield Park offers to you a glimpse into the past. The park is open year-round, while some facilities are only available during certain times of the year. This quiet area offers great picnic spots and several trails for bicycling or hiking. There are even special events held within the park throughout the year, so check their calendar before visiting!
Not only is this an excellent place for outdoor activities, but it's also a great way to get in touch with Michigan history. The land dates back long before the War of 1812 when Native Americans resided along these rivers. Once settlers arrived, conflicts did arise but ultimately treaties were made that allowed for both Native American and White settlements in many areas of Michigan including Monroe County which surrounds the park. The treaties made only lasted until 1836 before Chief Tecumseh lead a group of Native Americans against white settlers resulting in many battles including one that took place within the park itself, called the Battle of Frenchtown.
The battle wasn't the only notable event that happened here at River Raisin National Battlefield Park though. Other events include President James Monroe speaking to troops stationed along this area where he encouraged them to win the war, and General William Henry Harrison's victory over British forces at nearby Moravian Town which was known as the Battle of Lake Erie during this time period.
